Get quality advice
You can depend on Wizard Homes to offer the best advice and prices, and you can feel comfortable that the job is done right the first time.
Get a firm written quote
Some renovators will underbid just to get your business but beware of extra ongoing charges. Unless there is extra unforeseen work from the original plan, the quote we charge is the price you pay.
Create a renovation plan and stick to it
Remember, time is money. Renovation labour and material costs will escalate if you deviate from your original renovation plan.
Every time you add to your plan it will cost you money.
Buy your renovation materials on sale
Some clients want us to purchase materials for their renovation projects. However, you could buy your own and save. If you buy items on sale. You can save on items such as the kitchen cabinets vanity, shower, sinks, faucets even toilets or different types ot
shelving just by being a careful shopper.
Sometimes a $500 shower could be on sale for $250. You can also buy a $350 toilet on sale for $120. Sometimes you can save 50 per cent on new items from Kijiji or at the Re-Use Store. Buy items on sale and put them aside for renovation day. However,
we don’t recommend buying used.
Life time warranty paint can be costly
We see people being tricked into costly renovation items. There is paint on the market that claims to have a lifetime warranty but costs sometimes almost twice as much as comparable highquality paint. A life time warranty sounds great but it won’t protect your drywall if it becomes wet and moldy. The walls will have to be torn down anyway.
Beware of expensive easy to install renovation items
Easy-to-install renovation materials, like subflooring tiles designed to click together can be costly. At 7$ a piece, the average basement requires at least 150 tiles costing about $1050.
You could save about 60 per cent and achieve the same results just by buying plywood and waterproof membrane.
Basement bathroom savings tip
We can design and install a new basement bathroom the way you want it. A savings tip. Just by changing the location of your new basement bathroom you could save you as much as $4,000. The further away sewer lines are from washrooms, the more it will cost you to dig and install new pipes under the concrete basement floor.
Flooring savings tip
We can install all types of flooring. Over the years, we’ve found that buying high-quality vinyl flooring is one of the best options for basements and high traffic areas. It will save you money in the long-run. Also, it’s becoming less expensive daily. You pay a little more in the beginning but it’s worth it.
Some people might install laminate flooring to save money. However, it doesn’t stand constant mopping and moisture exposure and it’s likely that it will have to be replaced within two years because the finish is gone. With click-in vinyl flooring, there’s no gluing or nailing, it stands better moisture exposure and it is scratch resistant.
Basement renovation advice and savings tips
The type of molding such as baseboards, casing and crown moulding can improve the appearance of your home renovation and we can offer helpful advice. Since most of the houses have regular 8 feet ceiling hight and basements are even lower installing high baseboards and wide crown molding shortens your walls and it will optically make the room look smaller.
Wide mouldings also cost three times more than lower and thinner mouldings.
Unless you want to stain your moulding, you don’t have to buy expensive solid wood mouldings when you can save on finger joint paint grade wood moulding or MDF moulding.
Framing savings
We can give you framing options. Instead of using 2x4s, you can use 2x3s to save a little money and space.
Interior doors savings
Fancy doors are nice but expensive. An interior wooden solid door costs between 120$ and 200$ to save money you can buy a less expensive that looks almost the same for $40 door that will last at least 20 years.
Paint savings and advice Paint savings and advice
From our experience, high-quality paint will always save you money in the long-run. As a contractor, we can always get a good deal on high-quality paint. The coverage is good, it’s easy to apply, dries fast and has a nice professional finish.
We always use a high-quality paint that’s easy to apply and has a reliable quality finish. Some cheaper paints will drip ruining the finish. It will end up costing you more in labour to sand walls to have it repainted.
We’ll also give you advice on which paint colour to use. Don’t paint a small room with dark colours for example because it will optically make the room much smaller. Paint it with a light colour or any neutral color. If you’re not sure what paint to use, first call us.
How to choose the right paint colours
We have found choosing the right paint colours can be really frustrating for clients. Even though we always carry paint books to show samples, most people can’t imagine the colours on their walls.
Most customers might know an approximate colour they want. If you’re having difficulty choosing the right colour try this.
Rather than going to the paint store to pick up a little paper painting sample, buy a small color sample in 200 mil can’t , open the can, paint a little two-feet by two two-feet on the wall. It doesn’t matter where you paint since it’s going to be repainted anyways.
Just paint two thin coats that is not too thick, otherwise it will have to be sanded and patched. It’s a good investment because if you picked the wrong colour and don’t like it, a new paint job could cost an additional $500.
